Montserrat Contemporary Art, in collaboration with MyMicroGallery, presents Gravity and Levity: A Cosmic Dance, a group exhibition conceived and curated by Stefania Carrozzini.
Bringing together nine international artists — Gro Folkan, David Garcia, Thomas Girbl, Dena Haden, Ed Horstmann, Inés Mantel, Nora Sanz Herman, Paul Zawadzki, and Toni Andrea Zelter — the exhibition unfolds as a meditation on the subtle equilibrium between opposing forces: gravity and lightness, matter and spirit, rootedness and transcendence.
Drawing conceptually from the scientific revolutions of Isaac Newton and Albert Einstein, the exhibition extends beyond physics into the symbolic and existential realm. Gravity, the force that anchors bodies and structures the cosmos, becomes metaphor for material condition and responsibility. Lightness, though immaterial like the photon, emerges as a condition of awareness — an elevation of perception rather than an escape from reality.
As the curator writes in the exhibition catalogue: “Gravity grounds us. Lightness lifts us. Both inhabit the same body, the same breath. Art exists in this tension, embracing both; it is a resistance to life’s gravity.”
The works on view — spanning photography, painting, drawing, sculpture, and digital media — do not illustrate these concepts but inhabit them. Forms appear suspended yet substantial; gestures suggest ascent while remaining anchored to material presence. The exhibition becomes what the curator describes as: “a choreography of matter and spirit, limit and aspiration, as beings in this world but not of it.”
In an age in which scientific knowledge renders matter increasingly immaterial — dissolving it into particles, waves, and probabilities — while technological production simultaneously multiplies the density of our lived environment, Gravity and Levity addresses a central paradox of contemporary existence. As noted in the catalogue:
“Science lightens reality conceptually, dissolving matter into particles, fields, and probabilities; yet it simultaneously burdens reality, multiplying objects, devices, and transformations.”
Rather than resolving this tension, the exhibition sustains it. The artists propose neither escape nor denial, but a poised inhabitation of the in-between — a state in which imagination allows us to rise without severing our roots.
Gravity and Levity: A Cosmic Dance, invites viewers to consider whether true balance lies not in overcoming gravity, but in discovering lightness within it.
